‘Orphanage volunteering’ or ‘orphanage tourism’ has become a popular activity among tourists, faith-based organisations, education providers and young people on gap years. However, little attention has been paid to the harm that may be inflicted on children through such tourism or volunteering. This report details the ways in which these activities pose child protection risks and expose children to various forms of abuse, neglect and exploitation, including child sexual abuse and exploitation.
